seek ye first
In the beginning of the book of Jacob, the people aren't
remembering to be humble, and the prophet Jacob has to denounce many of their
sins. One of the problems that the people were having was that they loved
riches above everything else and sought these riches over God. Jacob counseled
them in chapter 2 verse 18:
"Before ye seek for riches, seek ye for the
kingdom of God."
While I was on my mission, I had the privilege to meet many
people who sought first for the kingdom of God. There was one member in
particular, irmão Zezinho, who will always be an incredible example of this to
me. He was the ward mission leader, and he was constantly giving to and serving
others. He had only been a member for about a year but had helped bring many
people to the Church. I remember one day going to his house for lunch and being
shocked as I walked in. He and his wife had two kids, and they lived in the humblest
of circumstances. Their home consisted of one small room, and all the furniture
they had was a mattress on the floor and a broken table with one chair. As we
walked in and sat on the ground, irmão Zezinho gestured to the room and said,
"Sorry elders and sisters, this is all we have. All the money we earn is
being saved to go to the temple and be sealed as a family." Irmão Zezinho
gave all he had to others, and what was left over was saved to go on the temple
trip to Recife. He sought first for the kingdom of God, and he was not ashamed.
He knew what mattered most.
It's not always easy to seek first for the kingdom of God,
but in the end, the kingdom of God is all that really matters. Earthly riches
are nothing compared to the riches and treasures of heaven. When we choose to
first seek for the kingdom of God, God will bless us in more ways than we could
ever imagine. We will come to know Him and be able to partake in the many
blessings He has in store for us. He loves us infinitely, and in His
kingdom we will find eternal happiness and peace.
